RHOOSE resident Iwan Baker was rewarded for switching to the lower 69KG class at the recent Apsull International Wrestling Open with a silver medal. Arriving at the weigh-in at 69.65kg, half an hour of jogging and skipping was required before he tipped the scales at the exact weight.
Iwan, a 16 year old pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, took the scalp of the British Junior bronze medallist on the way to the final, with his highlight of his day being a first round throw and pin combination. Competing in the Under 18 category final against a vastly more experienced opponent proved a step too far but represents significant progress and Iwan will approach his next competition in Malta with great confidence.
Other Welsh medallists in the junior sections were Leo Arzu (28KG - Silver) and Aaron Jones (35KG - Bronze).
