COLCOT ABC has been in action again this week with the current Welsh Novice Championships taking place throughout the country.

This week’s action being held in Gilfach Goch was another fine display of boxing skills from Colcot's team of boxers.

In his first final 11 year old Ollie Tipples was on fire with his accurate punching and dazzling skills taking every round against a tough T Humphries from Llanedryn ABC.

Much to the praise of his coach's he listened to his corner's advice and dominated throughout the fight winning the minor 32kg category.

In the minor 34kg category semi final, Jake Turnbull-Scully faced a rugged Swansea boy in the form of Paddy Murphy Gwent ABC. Having to box on the back foot Jake breezed the first round catching his foe as he charged in with clean counter punching, but was made to work for the next two rounds in a battle to the final bell with Jake winning on a split decision.

Also in a semi final was Kevin Gillen (Colcot ABC) in the novice elite 66kg category after a three year break from fighting, he was up against H Vince from Llanderyn ABC.

Having to blow the cobwebs off quite early from round one, Gillen was caught in a sticky situation with his younger fitter opponent coming forward with straight punching and an aggressive style to only manage an even first round. After a stern word and tactful advice from his corner, Gillen's boxing brain switched on and took control of the second round catching Vince with a volley of punches forcing the referee to give a standing eight count. After being allowed to continue Gillen didn't take long to finish his opponent off with punishing combinations making referee Tony Wynne to call a halt to the fight saving Vince from any more punishment.

Team Colcot will now travel to Swansea next weekend for the Championships Final where eight boxers will be competing for their first title.

"I’m extremely proud of my boxers in this Tournament and how they have represented our gym not just in the ring but also their conduct outside of it. I knew we had a strong team this year and was capable of winning many titles and am not surprised that we have a potential club record of nine novice champions with these boys who all deserve to be champions with the way they have all boxed over the last few weeks" says Coach Wayne Gurd who also wants to thank assistant coach Lee Froud who helps out at the gym every night and is very much appreciated.
