WILDCARDS Barry Town United tumbled out of theWord Cup last Tuesday evening; convincingly beaten by a top-notch Merthyr Town outfit.

The Martyrs arrived at Jenner Park on a formidable run of form; winning each of their five previous Southern League outings and scoring some 23 times along the way.

As such, a difficult night was anticipated, and so it proved; with Steve Jenkins' men from the Valleys racing to their second 7-1 win in a matter of days.

The visitors started strongly, with forward Ian Traylor's clinical finish putting them ahead after five minutes, before Barry-born Rhys Newman doubled the size of the task for his hometown team.

While the likes of winger Dale Howarth and Captain James Saddler worked hard throughout, the tie was effectively settled when Ryan Prosser netted Merthyr's third before the break; and the Martyrs' top goal scorer for 2013-14 added to Barry's woes with two more in the second half, completing his hat-trick.

Former Swansea City striker Kerry Morgan contributed the goal of the tie to make it six; walloping a sweet strike past Dan Bradley, whose goalkeeping brother Tom was on the visiting bench.

A penalty decision then confounded the home side's misery; with Corey Jenkins making no mistake, firing high into the top of the Barry net.

The second half did see Gavin Chesterfield's team create a number of chances; although they will naturally feel that they should have made more from these inroads.

In one of Barry's best opportunities, target man and former Martyr Tom Billing appeared certain to slot home a consolation, only to fire wide.

The Jenner Park faithful, however, did have something to cheer late on, when substitute TJ Nagi, making his return to action after ten months out, finished coolly to snatch a goal back.

It would be the final notable action of a humbling evening for Barry; albeit one against possibly the strongest visiting side in a decade.

A crowd of around 300 witnessed the match between the old rivals, which was encouraging given the unfortunate clash with Wales' international against Andorra.

A number of supporters of both clubs were in attendance for the Euro 2016 qualifying match in the landlocked microstate.
