SULLY Centurions 1st XI travelled to Creigiau in a crunch relegation fixture. The home side batted first and the opening pair of Taylor and Moore put on 130 for the first wicket. Moore, who went on to make 100, was the mainstay of the Creigiau innings, although most of the top order chipped in with runs, helping to push the score along to an impressive 256 for 6 at the end of the 50 overs. Pick of the Centurions bowlers was Shae Ellis, who posted figures of 3 for 36.

In reply, of the top order batsmen, only Jake Griffett (36) got to grips with the attack as three wickets went down very quickly. Young Adam Sylvester hit a nice 29, with skipper Lloyd Bruce (26) and Nick Jones (20) being Centurions’ other significant scorers. But Martin, with 4 for 36 and Innes (2 for 21) did most of the damage, as Centurions’ innings ended on 189 all out.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI hosted Creigiau in the penultimate league match of the season, with both sides looking for points to steer them to safety.

The visitors batted first and had reached 15 when Hughes was bowled by Lewis Doel for 5. The same bowler accounted for Rhys Powell for 3, thanks to a smart catch by ‘keeper Lewis Pyke, with just 24 on the board. The prize wicket of skipper Thomas (who had plundered 80 in the previous match between the two sides) also went to Doel, but the plaudits went to Mark Burnett for a wonderful catch. This left Creigiau on 52 for 3. Wickets began to fall regularly, with two for just 10 runs for Emma Davies. The first of these was down to a fantastic diving slip catch by Tom Pascoe to dismiss John for 1. Ricky Griffett chipped in with 2 for 25. This, plus the comical run out of Gareth Powell with the score on 105 for 9 left the visitors looking at a very low score. But Angell (15 not out) and Galea (30 not out) put on 42 for the final wicket, much to Sully’s frustration.

The Centurion innings got off to a slow start and it had taken 17 overs to reach 40. Then two wickets in as many overs slanted the game in Creigiau’s favour. Skipper Dave Sylvester (4) and opening partner Tom Pascoe (14) were both back in the hutch with the score on 48. But this brought Griffett to the crease and he played a faultless innings, timing the ball to perfection and eventually steered Sully to victory with a marvelous 101 not out. This was a fine innings that deservedly won the match for Centurions.

Now it all goes down to the wire with Saturday’s match against Rogerstone being another one that Centurions must win.
