CADOXTON Barry faced Penrhiwfer in the South Wales Senior League Division Two match. Cadoxton Barry won 7 – 1 with goals scored by Dawson (3), Thompson, Walsh, Barnet and Weekley and scoring for Penrhiwfer was Gregory.

Seven days earlier Penrhiwfer had taken Welsh League Division Two side, Dinas Powys, to a penalty shoot out before finally being eliminated from the Welsh Cup. So CB knew that they were going to have a job on their hands as they hosted the same side in a league match lasted Saturday. Indeed, despite the fact that CB's better finishing had seen them two goals to the good before some Pen players lost their cool, CB knew that they were in a match against stubborn and determined opposition.

An early Penrhiwfer attack ended with a short range effort hitting the side netting, but before the clock had struck two minutes CB found themselves a goal to the good. A quality pass from Baker found Williams who, in turn, found Steel out to the right and his perfectly floated cross found Dawson at the far post, from where his firm downward header found the net.

Adams and Thompson combined well to set up a promising situation, but the final cross was well intercepted. Then Curran headed on a Steel corner to Weekley only to see the shot cleared off the line. And for a further fifteen minutes CB continued to play some delightful football. But then, inexplicably, they started to play from deep as Penrhiwfer pressed for long periods, earning a string of corners in the process. And twice CB saw shots from these corners go only marginally over the bar. But CB hung on to take the single goal lead into the half time interval.

Assistant manager, Chris Barnet, gave the lads a roasting at half time, reminding them of the two goal lead that they had squandered the previous week. And it seemed to work as CB came out for the second half in a much more positive frame of mind. Though there was an early scare when Harker palmed away a shot at the edge of the box only to see it come back towards an unguarded net - Baker being in the right position to head off the line.

But following the immediate counter attack CB found themselves two goals to the good. A long ball from right to left found Dawson who deceived the 'keeper with a clever little dummy before firing home wide of the 'keeper's dive to the right.

Penrhiwfer went on the offensive from the restart and when Harker punched to clear, the ball was returned with venom, and only the presence of Curran saved the day for CB as he headed off the line. But CB now went on to enjoy their own spell of pressing, Weekley receiving a ball from Baker to smite the bottom of the right hand post. And the pressure continued as CB was awarded a free kick close to the half way line on the left. Walsh took the kick, but a visiting player who had already seen yellow stood just four yards off and stretched to parry away the kick. And the referee had no hesitation in showing a second yellow and a red.

So with thirty minutes still remaining CB took advantage as it became total one way trafic through to the final whistle. Dawson found Weekley with a delightful flick on before running into space. Weekley found Steel who was able to steer it back into the path of the oncoming Dawson to make it three nil with twenty to go. The game now looked safe, but it looked even safer still when a crunching tackle on Walsh near the left touch line earned the perpetrator and a second players red cards - the latter for a head butt in a mini skirmish that had followed.

With only eight players in front of them it was little more than a training match, but credit must go to the eight for digging in and restricting CB to only four more. Baker found Dawson who, in turn moved the ball on to Weekley for a simple tap in from inside the six yard box. And then an audacious and deliberate shot from Walsh, forty yards out on the left found the 'keeper unable to scramble into position in time to save the unexpected crack at goal.

The sixth goal came following a slow build up involving some twenty or more passes before substitute Barnes buried an unselfish pass from Dawson. Then Thompson made it seven before Pen broke upfield for the first time in a long while. A player was upended in the box and the visitors got their consolation when Gregory stepped up to convert from the spot.

This win takes CB into one of the top three spots, but they know that they will have to play well to retain it when they visit Stanleytown next Saturday 13th September. Kick off 2pm
