HARDY swimmers and runners are invited to sign up for Barry Island’s first Aquathon event which will see competitors battle the waves before a run.

Cardiff Triathletes have teamed up with the Vale Council to host the first ever event with proceeds in aid of the RNLI as a tribute to Cardiff Triathletes’ friend and founding member, Stuart MacCormac, who died while scuba diving in November 2011.

Competitors will face a 650m swim in the sea off Whitmore Bay, followed by a five kilometre run along the promenade during the event on Sunday, September 28.

Race director, Andrew Deans said: “It was Stuart's passion to encourage newcomers and young people into triathlon and we are very keen to attract local people to take part. In recognition of Stuart’s great love of the sea, all proceeds from this event will go to the RNLI.”

Cardiff Triathletes’ chairman, Claire Manson added: “The golden sandy beach, sheltered bay and beautiful coastline makes this a very inclusive and spectator-friendly event that we hope will attract both first-time and regular multi-sport competitors. The event will be family friendly and provides a great opportunity to see the recent developments to the area.”

Vale Council cabinet member for leisure, parks, culture and sport development, Cllr Gwyn John said it was hoped to develop the event into a full triathlon for next year.

100 places are available and deadline for entry is September 19.

Athletes must be a minimum of 18 years of age with parental consent granted for anyone between 16 and 17.

The first man and woman will gain a trophy.

Swimmers take the plunge at 9.15am and wetsuits are compulsory until the transition area on the eastern side of Whitmore Bay.

The swimmers-turned-runners will then head between both headlands.
