South Wales Senior League Division Two

Cefn Cribwr 1 - 2 Cadoxton Barry

Harris....................Dawson 2

Cefn Cribwr lost one Bridgend League match last season before qualifying for the South Wales Senior League in a four cornered play off series. Among the other sides in the play offs were the mighty Cardiff Cosmos. So, after three pre-season friendly defeats, CB couldn't have picked a stiffer test to start the season - especially with eleven possible first team contenders unavailable through injury, holidays and work calls. However, those who did answer the call did the club proud with Dawson and Walsh being the stand out players in what was a quality all round team performance.

And it took Dawson just ninety seconds to set down a marker when a throw in the middle of the park found him to, in turn, find the back of the net from twenty yards. And the bright start continued with Dawson again seeing a blast from a long throw being deflected wide.

But from that point Cefn began to play their way into the game to look dangerous on a number of occasions, a long ball from right to left seeing their number eight bringing a great reaction save from CB 'keeper, Harker. And it was Harker to the rescue again when he dived to turn a header from a curling free kick around the post. For a period leading up to half time CB began to look a little jittery. Thus it was no shock when low corner from the right was swept home by Harris to see the league new boys go into the break all square.

With Danny Jones struggling with a leg problem Carl Steele started the second half in his place. And Steele was well in the thick of things as CB started the second half every bit as positively as they had done the first, a Dawson cross finding Adams, though the shot went wide. But the hosts continued to threaten on the break as their number six headed narrowly wide from a cross.

Steele gained possession to the right of the penalty box and looped the ball over to Thompson whose fierce drive brought the best out of the home keeper. And then a Scott Williams corner, helped by the wind, hit the Cefn framework where the right upright met the cross bar.

Down at the other end, one of Cefn's many long balls, set up a two on one situation with the hosts favourite to score, but Walsh stretched with perfect timing to get the touch that saved the day.

But back came CB as a long throw from Adams found Weekley at the near post byline. He played it back towards Dawson, some twenty yards infield, from where his perfectly struck swerving volley gave the keeper no chance. It was a cracking goal and one which deserved to win any match. And, indeed, with Cefn now appearing to tire, that's what it turned out to do. Most of the serious chances were now coming CB's way with Dawson shooting on the turn to go marginally wide again. But it required one more goal saving tackle from Walsh to ensure that the points went to the side from Wales' largest town.

A special thanks go to Cefn Cribwr for their friendliness and excellent hospitality. Many a side will visit them this season and fare far less well than Cadoxton Barry.
