Table-topping Romilly stay on course for league title

Maintaining their challenge for Munro Cup honours, second-placed Barry Romilly picked up 14 points from a 44-shot win at Sully.

With a fair mixture of club and A team players, Romilly began strongly and led by 22 shots after five ends. Taking total control, Romilly increased the advantage to 50 shots by the 10th end and, although Sully pegged a few shots back in the later stages, the visitors held on comfortably.

Barry Romilly travelled to Caerphilly for Saturday's ML 1 game with a firm belief that they could beat a side who always provide a tough challenge on their own green.

Having played more games than their nearest challengers, it was imperative for Romilly to sustain their recent momentum, but, with rain forecast and the home green well known for flooding, the local players were a little apprehensive.

Taking time to adapt to a quick green, Romilly trailed by six and seven shots after five and 10 ends respectively, and, after they narrowed the gap to two shots by the 15th end, the heavens opened and the green began to flood. With 15 ends completed, had the game been called off, Penyrheol would be the winners and take 10 points to Romilly’s four. Fortunately, for the visitors, the rain suddenly stopped, the game continued and Romilly chalked up a six-shot win, with successes for the rinks of Brian Foscolo and Jeff Wright. Mel Newman’s rink, although losing, held their opponents over the last six ends, and Graham Cogbill’s four produced a brilliant comeback to lose by one shot after trailing 12-2 at one stage.

With five games to go, Romilly's nearest challengers still have to visit Romilly Park.
