ON the back foot from the early stages, Sully Centurions Cricket Club 1st XI suffered a comprehensive nine-wicket defeat when they entertained Rogerstone on Saturday.

The first Sully wicket fell in the third over when Ferdouz was caught at slip for a duck with the score just five, while Tom Edwards was next to go for 23. Ben Callow (38), Owain Sullivan (27) and Jake Griffettt (39) provided some respectability, but A Harris, L Harris and Webb all claimed three victims to ensure Centurions never got the upper hand and eventually finished on 147 all out.

The Sully bowling figures made for miserable reading as the visitors reached the target in just 28 overs for the loss of one wicket - Trinder (11) who was bowled by Nathan Cuddihy. Harris (75) and Holdaway (41) steered the visitors to victory.

SULLY CENTURIONS 1st XI: 148 all out (J Griffett 39, B Callow 38)

ROGERSTONE: 149-1 (Harris 75, Holdaway 41)

HAYER'S FIVE WICKETS

Batting frailities again let Centurions down when the Seconds travelled to Rogerstone Welfare on a hot afternoon.

With skipper Davie Sylvester asking the home side to bat, Centurions produced a decent display with the ball with opening bowlers Emma Davies and Reece Bennett finding an accurate line but unable to make a breakthrough despite some near misses.

Making a solid start, the visitors reached 57 before Tom Pascoe took the first of three wickets thanks to a great one-handed catch behind the stumps from Paul Harrison. Hughes had reached 42 when Tom Davies, who had a fine game in the field, caught him off the bowling of Ricky Griffett with the score on 73. Jo Hayer produced a notable spell of five for 22, but it was a miserly nine-over spell from Griffett (1-12, including six maidens) that put a stranglehold on Rogerstone. However, Reed, with a lively 22 towards the end, ensured a reasonable total of 139.

Centurions' innings was just over two overs old when the normally cautious Sylvester was caught for just three with only five runs on the board. Griffett added to his great bowling performance by sticking around long enough to hit 28, but only David Burnett (13) added any more significant runs.

As Centurions' middle order and tail crumbled, there were four ducks and the innings finally ended on 74. Rogerstone's top bowler was Dinesh (5-17), who was well supported by Jarrett (3-26) and Wright (2-4).

ROGERSTONE WELFARE 2nd XI: 139 (Hughes 42; J Hayer 5-22)

SULLY CENTURIONS 2nd XI: 74 (R Griffett 28; Dinesh 5-17)
