SULLY SPORTS RFC 1st XV 47 CARDIFF CIACS 7
PREVIOUS contests between these two old rivals had always been fiercely contested and produced close results - but Sully Sports were worthy winners on this occasion.
On a sunny but windy afternoon, Sports were back to full strength and the forwards quickly stamped their authority on the game, dominating the scrums to regularly take possession against the head and safely keeping possession at the line-out. This provided an excellent base for Sully’s backs to show their individual and collective flair.
Sports dominated at every department and were so effective at the breakdown that CIACS were forced to commit more players in an attempt to gain possession.
This created overlaps time and time again and all Sully had to do was keep the ball safely in hand along the line as every time it reached the wing they looked like scoring; indeed, both wingers Dave Stillman and Nathan Taylor scored very good tries.
However, Sully did make hard work of it, and time and again the ball was brought back into the forwards when overlaps were apparent while wingers' calls for the ball went unheard. Sully’s tally could and should have been in the 60s.
Nevertheless, it was a greatly improved performance from the previous outing against STAR, with outstanding performances from hooker Ben Such, who scored the first try, and outside-half Chris Cummings who scored two tries and added 12 points with a fine display of kicking.
There were excellent contributions from all players especially Nathan and Alex Szuchnik, John Dimond, Peter Brown and full-back Wayne Jones.
Next week Sports face a real test against Hartridge RFC who are renowned for their strong pack and, like the local side, are yet to lose a game in the current season.
