Tough test for Vale Girls FC U16s: Plus other results

MISSING a number of regulars due to injuries and other commitments, the Vale Girls Football Club U16s faced league title favourites Troedyrhiw.

It was always going to be a tough game for the new club as Troedyrhiw boast no less than five Welsh national U16 capped players and, within the first 10 minutes, the home side were testing Vale goalkeeper Rebecca Egerstrom; it was a theme that was to continue until their breakthrough after just 20 minutes.

With a number of influential players missing, the Vale team lacked confidence and, when they did gain possession, they very quickly gave it away for Troedyrhiw to build yet another attack.

Under almost constant pressure, the Vale Girls trailed 3-0 at the break and, almost immediately after the restart, captain Shelby Richards and ever present centre back Ella Hatherill went off injured to further add to their woes.

After being reduced to the bare 11 players and a number playing out of position, the Vale Girls battled extremely hard against very strong opposition but eventually lost out 7-0.

Player of the match for Vale Girls had to go to Emily Gillard who time and time again put her body in the firing line to block persistent Troedyrhiw attacks.

So, after a fine opening day win against Porthcawl, the side came crashing down to earth even though circumstances made the difficult task even harder.

Hopefully, they'll get back on track next week when they travel to Caerphilly.

The U14s played local rivals Sully Sports and suffered a 6-3 defeat and still await their first win of the season.

In the U12 division, Vale Athletic won both games - Sully Sports 2-0 and Penybont Athletic 6-0. Vale Wanderers, however, lost both games - 2-0 to Porthcawl and 4-1 to Port Talbot. Athletic now top of the table and hope their fine results will continue.
