SCHOOL sport competitions begin thick and fast at the start of the new term and cross country took centre stage at Barry Comprehensive School last week.

Initially all boys from years 7, 8 and 9 competed in the inter-house competition, where they gain points for their house and then it was the turn of the senior athletes in the school to compete in their own race to find the school champion.

All races were exciting to the very finish with Sion Spence triumphing in Year 7, Harry Carter winning the Year 8 race, Lewis Gibbon beating a good field to win the Year 9 event, and Matthew Edwards easing home in the senior competition.

The top finishers from each of these races then formed the representative teams which lined up for the first cross country fixture of the new season at Trelai Park.

Notable performances came in the senior competition where Matthew Edwards made a strong start to the season finishing in 2nd position and Elliot Clissold 12th, whilst in the Year 7 event Callum Bellamy’s 10th spot was an excellent finish, only bettered by a superb debut run from Sion Spence who managed to hold on to 1st position and come home victorious.

All in all a solid start to the season with plenty to build on the next fixture in October. Well done to all involved.
