THE WOMMA World Martial Arts Games XIII took place at the Telford International Centre from August 16-19.

Local WMA kickboxing student Liam Rees, a pupil at St Richard Gwyn School in Barry, competed as a member of Team Wales along with his instructor Caie Copp (from Cardiff).

Students had travelled from Canada, America, Mexico and many other countries to compete in this spectacular event.

Liam, 15, took gold in advanced boys points sparring age 15-17 years, to become World Champion. He fought some world class fighters to gain this title and is now back in training for future events.

Caie (age 21) won bronze in category under 72kg men's points sparring, along with a bronze in men's under 72 kg continuous sparring. Caie, who was captain of the men's welsh points team event, also took gold in men's full contact, under 60 kg, so is also now world champion.

"There were some awesome competitors at this year's games, and we have a great deal of respect for all who took part," he said.
