GREAT TACKLES: Overcoming the challenge of visitors Lampeter on Sunday, Barry Bombettes put in some great tackles.
BARRY BOMBETTES 32 LAMPETER 12
THE Barry Rugby Club ladies' side faced Lampeter in their first league fixture of the season on Sunday and previous form suggested a comfortable opening fixture for the home side.
However, this was not the case as Lampeter opened with a decisive mind set and controlled play with some good passing and pressure. This brought them an early try which was successfully converted.
Barry didn’t let their heads drop and came back at Lampeter with some controlled moves but this failed to dampen the spirit of the visitors who managed to secure a second try, which went unconverted, halfway through the first half.
Following a quick talking to behind the try line from the head coach, Barry hit back with renewed vigour and started to play the rugby they are well known for, being quick to the tackle and stealing the ball on a number of occasions. Following a number of rucks on the away team's five metres line, Boffy picked up and crossed for the Bombettes' first try. K Jones was unsuccessful with the conversion.
This spurred on the Barry side and, showing more determination and structure, they battled through Lampeter’s defence for Jones to secure a second try which she successfully converted. Lampeter responded by taking play close to the Barry line but the home side stood firm to turn the ball over and leave the scores level at 12-12 at half time.
Barry burst out of the blocks in the second half but the game was marred by an unfortunate injury to the visiting No 8 who was hurt in a tackle by Waller. Her awkward fall meant a call for an ambulance and a move to another pitch to continue the match.
Following 10 minutes of reorganisation, the match re-started with a scrum to Barry close to the Lampeter try line and it was Richards, playing No 8 for the first time, who crashed over for Bombettes' third try.
Barry had finally found their pace and continued to utilise the ball in the forwards and backs. A fantastic run from J Jones led to a first try for Cahill and this was quickly followed by another try for K Jones. The Bombettes continued to attack and finished the game with another try by Richards. The home team's fitness won the game in the end, with a final scoreline to Barry of 32-12.
Mention goes to B Jones for a good game on the wing and S Brown who managed the game superbly at scrum half. Many players played out of position due to injuries and holidays, and everyone took on their individual roles well. Thank you to Nigel for sorting the referee situation.
