Defeat at Bridgend brings disappointing league season to an end for Sully Centurions
7:40am Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport
THIS rain-affected 2012 league season ended on a typical note for Sully Centurions CC, with all but one of the four teams having their games cancelled due to the wet weather.
The only team to play were the 2nd XI, who went down to a 5 wicket defeat at Bridgend.
Sully batted first in a match reduced to 39 overs each and were soon in trouble, with openers Matthew Thomas and Ben Callow back in the pavilion with only 12 runs on the board. On a wet day the conditions favoured the bowlers and Centurions found it hard to gain any momentum, with wickets falling with some regularity.
Oz Bennett (31) and Tom Edwards (13) shared a stand of 40 to push the score along, but when both were out within a few balls of each other, the run rate slowed down again and Centurions eventually finished on 102 for 8.
In reply, Bridgend didn't have it all their own way, losing 5 wickets in the run chase, but the target was reached in the 35th over and they ran out deserved winners.
Bridgend 107-5
Sully 102/8
SEASON ENDS
SO the 2012 league season finished with respectable mid table positions for Centurions’ 1st and 2nd XIs. The 3rd XI finished in third place and the 4ths ended their truncated season in fourth place.
Centurions will want to see the back of this so called ‘summer’ but will take some comfort in the knowledge that several young players have emerged as real prospects for the future. The club now embark on the annual tour to North Devon – followed by a September of friendly matches (weather permitting).
