Penarth and Dinas Runners race to 5km success

PENARTH and Dinas Runners put their best foot forward when they competed in the SSAFA 5km race last week.
The running club, which meets every Monday evening at Cosmeston Country Park, won in five categories at the end of the three race series held at Bute Park.
22 runners took part in the championship race last Wednesday (July 25), with several other club members cheering them on from the sidelines.
Winners overall in the race series were Lisa Cleary, Andrea Hurman and Emily Luke, who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the women’s division, whilst Yvonne Williams won the Women’s Veterans 50 category and Malcolm Bradley came 2nd in the Men’s Veterans 60 category.
Winners on the night included Lisa Cleary, who was 3rd woman overall, Andrea Goodfellow who was 1st in the Women’s Veterans 40 category, Andrea Hurman who was 1st in the Women’s Veterans 45 category and Yvonne Williams who was 1st in the Women’s Veterans 50 category.
Runners that also achieved personal best times included Lindsey Hunt, Danielle Rayner and Clare O’Reilly.
Each winner was presented with a bottle of wine during an awards ceremony at the Blackweir Tavern after the race, with a cash prize also presented to the series winners. Money raised from the race will go towards the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help.
The run also served as a championship race for Penarth and Dinas Runners, with club members desperate to score points to finish top of their table at the end of the season.
The overall winner on the night was Gary Brown (18.46), followed by Christopher Nellins (20.30), Rhodri Evans (20.31), Andrew Jones (20.34), Malcolm Bradley (21.04), Lisa Cleary (21.22), Steve Goodfellow (22.00), Andrea Hurman (22.07), Chris Seal (22.52), Paul Furlong (23.33), Emily Luke (24.03), Anna Helsing (24.11), Danielle Rayner (24.47), Alison Cook (25.21), Yvonne Williams (25.30), Amanda Barrington (25.59), Sarah Stevens (26.28), Lindsey Hunt (26.32), Janice Clement (26.35), Clare O’Reilly (26.37), Andrea Goodfellow (26.55), and Susan Smith (28.06).
Penarth and Dinas Runners meet at Cosmeston Country Park (by the Visitor Centre) on Monday evenings at 7pm.
