TO celebrate the start of the London 2012 Games, a FREE Olympic-themed sports day is being held in Barry town centre on Saturday, July 28.

Organised by the Vale Council’s sports and play development team, the event takes place in Central Park and King Square from 11am to 3pm and gives families a chance to try their hand at a range of sports and play activities.

The activities on offer will include Olympic sports such as football, basketball, athletics, volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics and badminton, as well as Paralympic sports including goalball and sitting volleyball. Popular DJ Sterling will also provide some tunes and dance moves on the square between 12pm and 2pm, while play workers will provide Olympic-themed play activities for children to get involved in.

Council sports and play development manager Karen Davies said: "This free event is a great way for local families to mark the start of the London 2012 Games. There will be lots of activities on offer and the Olympic values of respect, friendship and fair play will also be encouraged with some fun medals being handed out too."
