FOLLOWING a long and exciting Barry and District United Clubs' League season, Wyndham Conservative Club ‘B’ were crowned as Division 1 snooker champions, to bring the title to the club for the first time in its 113-year history.

In just its second season - and following a third place finish first time out - the team beat off extremely stiff competition from defending champions Barry Dock Cons ‘B’ and a rejuvenated West End ‘A’ who took them all the way to the penultimate week of the season.

Founding members Mauro Zeraschi, Tom Vedmore, Lee Glanville and Andrew Ferguson were joined by Keith Jenkins, Mark Swayne and Dave Brown at the start of the season, and the team quickly showed their potential by bounding into the top two with Barry Dock; the two teams dropped only five frames between them in their opening 48.

After a slow start, the West End found their feet and joined what was to be an exciting three-way race for the rest of the season.

During Christmas week, the Wyndham, dropping just one frame in 18, took the lead in the title race for the first time, with the other two sides a couple of points behind with all to play for.

The experienced Wyndham ‘A’ helped their compatriots maintain that lead by managing to beat both of their rivals in a matter of weeks, with the Wyndham ‘B’ continuing to keep their form going, showing great team spirit and getting good results against good teams and from difficult positions.

The defining point of the season came when they beat both their rivals 4-2 in consecutive weeks in February to extend their lead and potentially put the league out of the reach of their opponents. Following these wins, the team never looked back and again showed their great team spirit and discipline by coming back from 3-1 down in both reverse fixtures to draw 3-3, helping to maintain their record of just one loss all season and ensuring their lead would not diminish.

With two games to go, Barry Dock beat the West End to end their hopes and then travelled to the Savoy needing a minimum of a 5-1 win to keep alive any hopes of the league title; a 4-2 win handed the Wyndham the title with a game to play.

The Wyndham enjoyed their final fixture knowing the league was won and, celebrating well into the night, now look forward to the league presentation and bringing the Division 1 trophy to the Wyndham for the first time.

The team would like to congratulate and thank team captain Lee Glanville for leading the team to the title and are looking forward to defending it next season. Lee and the team would also like to thank the Wyndham Cons for their support throughout the year.
