CARDIFF HSOB 10 BARRY 38 LAST Saturday's comprehensive display at the Diamond Ground, Whitchurch, earned Barry their second win from three league outings when they beat Cardiff HSOB 38-10.
From the kick-off the home side, making full use of its speedy midfield and an extra' wide pitch, caused the Barry defence some anxious moments.
After weathering this early onslaught, however, Barry's prop James Hollister led a charge into the home side's twenty-two from which outside-half Andy Griffiths crossed for the opening try.
Centre Chris Cummings converted for a seven-point lead. As the game entered the second quarter Barry increased the lead with Griffiths, once again taking full advantage of his forwards' dominance, breaking through for his second try, converted by Cummings.
Immediately before the interval, the Old Boys hit back with a penalty goal to reduce the deficit to 11 points.
In the second half, Barry played with more confidence and determination. An excellent tackle on the opposition's outside-half by Barry captain Matthew Campbell dislodged the ball for his brother and fellow lock forward, John, to initiate a move that put left wing Peter O'Sullivan clear for an unconverted try.
The Old Boys, although now 16 points in arrears, continued to attack but with the Barry defence on top and with the forwards chasing and harrying their runners, Barry went further ahead after scrum-half John Dimond took full advantage at a five-metre scrum to beat three tacklers and score Barry's fourth try. Cummings converted.
Further tries followed from hooker Lewis Williams who, after gathering the ball from a ruck, dived over close to the corner and by Cummings who, following strong run by Griffiths, scored near the posts. Cummings, who finished with 13 points to his name, converted both tries.
As the game moved into injury time the Old Boys gained some reward for their persistence by scoring a breakaway converted try for a final score of 38 points to 10 in Barry's favour.
The win was a well-deserved victory for all the Barry squad but especially for Andy Griffiths, who delivered a man of the match' performance with his tactical kicking and strong running in attack and flanker Owain Brown, whose tackling was outstanding.
Barry's 1st XV has a free weekend next Saturday, but there are games for both the 2nd XV and the Youth XV who are away at Rhiwbina and Llanishen respectively.
On Saturday Barry entertain Abercwmboi kick-off is 2.30pm.
