BARRY 1ST XV 32 PORTH HARLEQUINS 3 AFTER the disappointment of defeat in the opening league fixture away at Cilfynydd, closely followed by their cup exit, it was good news at last, as Barry put in a top performance in the first home match of the season.
Some early softening-up tactics that resulted in numerous blood stitches for a couple of Barry forwards failed to provoke and intimidate, and by commendably sticking to the coach's game plan, a six-point lead developed after half an hour playing uphill.
Centre Chris Cummings put over two well-struck penalty goal attempts.
He also rounded off first-half proceedings, converting his own try, and followed up a kick ahead from fellow centre Andy Buckland, whose superb midfield break created the opportunity, to claim all 13 points so far.
Porth's only score came from a penalty kick after quarter of an hour of the second half.
Barry responded immediately when an attempted clearance kick by the Porth outside half was charged down by Cummings, who, on regaining the ball, was held up just short of the try-line. However, No 8 Jason Evans was on hand to latch on to the ball and score.
Cummings converted.
Barry dominated the closing stages, with flanker Lewis Williams grabbing a close-range try, converted by Cum-mings, to take his points total to 17.
Outside-half Andy Griffiths rounded off events with a 20-metre solo.
The team hope this win can be built on with a similar performance this Saturday, at Cardiff HSOB, ko 2.30pm.
