BRYNTIRION ATHLETIC 6 Barry Town 1

THE DRAGONS went down to their biggest defeat since May 2007, when they were comprehensively beaten by league leaders Bryntirion Athletic, managed by former Barry Town favourite, Francis Ford.

Bryntirion are the top scorers in the division and also have the best defensive record.

The home team were on the offensive from the first whistle and were creating many problems for a Dragons side missing Kurt Bettles and James Saddler through injury, and Atif Bashir on international duty.

It was no surprise when they took the lead from a cross, which seemed to hit a forward on his back before going in. The second came soon after from a cross and neat header, but prior to that the ball had gone out of play and was missed by the assistant referee.

But Bryntirion were in full flow and it was no surprise when they scored a third.

The Dragons created few chances as they were harried by their buoyant opponents.

The second half started well for Barry but whether they were just playing better, or whether Bryntirion had taken their foot off the pedal, who knows?

They started to create chances but were guilty of poor finishing. Anthony Nagi thought he had scored when he chipped the keeper and the ball appeared to cross the line only for a defender to kick it away, and to everyone's surprise play was waved on.

With 20 minutes remaining Josh Bell eventually put the Dragons on the scoresheet. Town should have scored several more but again poor finishing let them down in several one-on-ones with the keeper.

Bryntirion made them pay for their profligacy when they scored three more times in the last five minutes, with the Dragons this time guilty of poor defending.

All in all a very disappointing performance with mistakes all round.

It could be said that 6-1 flattered the league leaders – but they play a simple yet effective game of football, create chances and more importantly score from them.
