Another home win for Barry RFC - just!

Barry RFC 26 CEFN COED 5

NOT FOR the first time this season Barry faced an opposition which opted for uncontested scrums from the outset.

The WRU need to act urgently to prevent our game becoming a pale version of rugby league.

Sanctions in terms of points deducted would penalise weaker clubs and thus be counter-productive. But the present situation allows flagrant abuse and risks, damaging the very fabric of the game whilst disadvantaging sides with strong forwards.

Barry opted to play the first half uphill against the wind. Starting positively and after a tense opening, they were soon ahead by virtue of a forceful try by Gee, converted by Cummings.

Lack of composure, weak tackling and poor choice of options let Cefn Coed in for a well-deserved try, which they were unable to convert.

Barry continued to choose wrong running angles, making defence easier for the visitors.

The home team finished the first half spurning easy points from two eminently kickable positions. In such situations points must be taken when on offer. They create pressure and doubt within the opposition ranks, which in turn will provide opportunity for try scoring.

In the second half Barry had the elements and contours in their favour. Soon after the outset they scored a good pushover try by Hunt.

The game then meandered along aimlessly, with Barry doing their best to let the visitors off the hook through ill-directed and pointless manoeuvres, which could not possibly have featured in their training sessions.

It was as well that the Front Row Union decided to intervene with a second try by Gee under the posts, which was converted by Cummings.

At the death the home team scored a not-entirely-deserved but nevertheless elusive bonus point via a strong surge by Adams, the try then converted by the captain.

On May 15, Barry travel to Blackwood for the deciding match of the season and coaches leave the club at 1pm. All are welcome.
