BARRY 59 DERI 0
ONE FOR the record books!
An entire game played with uncontested scrummages because the visitors could not field a specialist hooker in the front row.
Far from being criticised, the players and coaches of Deri should be applauded for fulfilling their fixture obligations under the most trying circumstances.
The Reservoir Field lived up to its name last Saturday after enough rain had fallen over the previous few days to fill that water container several times over!
Barry’s campaign thus far has been based on tight forward domination but this was denied to them by scrum and weather limitations. There had to be a reappraisal of tactics and it was reassuring that they readily adapted to the need to impose themselves in other areas.
With Ryan safe under the high ball and Evans making some progress in the centre, pressure was being built up on the Deri defence. This would have been much more telling without over-reliance on crash ball in the inside centre position. Varying approach play makes life much more difficult for defenders.
However, continual attacking did produce results with a try by O Brown, which was well converted by Cummings from wide out.
Barry signalled their intent by opting for lineouts rather than taking shots at goal from penalties. This led directly to a further converted try on the stroke of half time.
The second half was barely 5 minutes old when Barry created an excellent try by Gill, after some very aggressive running by forwards and backs with Provis and George prominent.
Barry were now obviously going to run the ball at every opportunity and cracks began to show in the Deri defence. Their cause was not helped by first having a player sin-binned and then losing another to injury.
Deri, who had opted for uncontested scrums, could not bring on any replacements.
The game now ceased to be a meaningful contest and for the last half hour Barry try scorers kept the scoreboard ticking over. An outstanding effort by Cummings assured the home side of that valuable bonus point.
H Jones got into the act with a good try from 20 metres for new kicker Lee to add the conversion. The front row union were rewarded for some fine tight play when replacement Hollister crossed for 2 tries from fully 25 metres out.
With forward domination total, the platform was created for the eighth and ninth tries for Provis and D Evans.
Hopefully Barry will take this form into the remaining fixtures:
Saturday, April 10, St Albans. (A)
Wednesday, April 14, Canton. (A)
Barry were due to play Senghenydd away on Wednesday, April 7).
Tickets are now on sale for the Presentation Dinner Dance at the Memorial Hall on Saturday, June 12. Tables from ten seats upwards can be booked with Andy Jamieson on 01446 411737. Book early as tickets are limited.
