Win takes Sully RFC up to second spot

SULLY SPORTS RFC 27 CIACS RFC 12

DRY, COLD, sunny with a light on-shore breeze were the conditions last Saturday when Sully Sports RFC welcomed Cardiff CIACS to Swanbridge.

Earlier in the season when the sides met in Cardiff they appeared to be well matched and a good game of rugby ended in a 5-5 draw when the referee abandoned the game – so both teams knew that they would have to be at their best to gain advantage over their opponents.

Almost from the kick off Sully showed that they were geared up for this re-match with good individual performances and excellent teamwork, a factor sadly missing for much of the early season. Sully's forwards, led by Andrew Penberthy who clearly inspired his younger team mates, dominated from the start, frequently pushing CIACS off their own ball.

This provided a solid base and quality ball for Sully's scrum half Mike Mees, who linked so well with the outside half Mike Saunders that we think that there may be a relationship forming between them.

Both showed vision and made good use of the ball, Saunders' tactical kicking was superb and inevitably led to points.

When the ball was given to the backs they clearly surprised CIACS defence with their speed.

Good handling meant that the ball often arrived safely in the hands of lightning fast winger Dave Stillman. Although this amount of ball, its shape, texture and feel must have surprised him, he always put it to good use and was eventually rewarded with a try of his own.

Sully played excellent team rugby only slightly marred when captain Peter Mees was sin-binned for a momentary lapse of discipline, when he over-enthusiastically reminded his opposite number that it is against the rules to handle the ball when on the ground and off your feet.

Scott Mills, Sully's No 8 scored two tries, the best of which came when his power, combined with support from other forwards, allowed him to crash over the line.

Soon after Justin De Tomaso showed great initiative with a quickly taken tap penalty and a short, strong run to the line.

The whole performance was rounded off by Mike Saunders who kicked 2 conversions and a penalty.

This was an excellent performance by the whole Sully team and one that they can be proud of with a final score of 27-12.

Sully move into second place in the Cardiff and District league.
