A BARRY Athletic XI, captained by Richard Eastman, took on a strong Dinas Powys CC side fresh from a strong finish to the 2009 season.
On a hot and sunny afternoon at a packed-out Barry Oval, Dinas Powys won the toss and chose to bat first.
Barry began on the back foot as Dinas smacked boundary after boundary, propelling them to 20 runs from the first 4 overs.
However, the Stags came back strongly and with some great bowling performances from Andy Ellis (2-19), Dominic Lack (1-44) and Neil Holmes (1-27), along with committed performances in the field on what was previously anticipated to be a batsman’s paradise of a pitch, Dinas Powys closed on 189-4 from their allocation of 40 overs.
The mid session interval was dominated by Denise Walklett’s fine teas to delight both sets of players. Some of the visiting players quoted the teas as ‘best in the business’, and everything was gone before the interval drew to a close.
The fans were also treated to a guest appearance from Club Legend Steve ‘Chocco’ Jones, who was available to sign autographs from here, there and everywhere.
With a target of 190 runs the Stags could afford to dictate the tempo of the innings. However, this theory was thrown out of the window immediately after the first 11 overs as openers, Ashley Baker and Jophin Reji smashed away the bowling attack, recording a massive 77 runs.
There were boundaries everywhere and the game was in Barry’s control throughout the innings.
Baker went on to record his maiden 50 for the club, but fell shortly after, dragging the ball on to his stumps for 52. Reji continued and passed 50 too, before new batsmen Tom Ellis was bowled for a duck.
The match remained in the Stags’ control as Andy Ellis blasted away the attack and reached 42 not out. Reji was there right the way through the innings, scoring an impressive 71 not out.
The Stags reached the target required with more than 6 overs to spare, and won by 8 wickets.
