Victory again for Barry Wanderers

SULLY-BASED Barry Wanderers First XI took the short trip past the Airport to Rhoose, to be entertained by Sully Centurions Thirds.

Stand-in skipper Hassett asked the home side to bat on a good looking wicket, but with rain forecast it was a decent shout.

The Centurions didn't look like they would live up to their name as they were reeling at 29 for 4 off 10 overs, thanks to some tidy opening bowling from Neil Mantell (3 for 19) and the returning Andy Fenton (1 for 9).

Mother Nature came in at number 7 and put in a resolute performance to save the game for the home side by deluging the wicket, meaning it was an early finish and down to Hayes Point (a mere 6 miles away) which was clearly enjoying a different climate!

The 2nd XI played a Newport 4th XI on Saturday at Hayes Point in a Welsh Conference Division 3 contest.

With the weather looking rather uncertain for the start of the game, Wanderers Captain Chris Barnes strode out to the middle with Newport skipper Dave Carter to toss the coin with the rain starting to fall.

Barnes won the toss and decided to bat! Barnes and Dean Thomas opened for the home side and after one over, everybody scurried off to the sanctuary of the pavilion to shelter from the heavy rain.

The home captain was now wondering what he was thinking - batting first as the rain changed the pitch conditions to favour the bowlers.

Sure enough as the two sides returned to the field after the adverse weather, Barnes was bowled by talented left arm spinner Andrew Davies without a run on the board, with the ball barely leaving the pitch.

Luke Denning joined Thomas and soon found the going just as tough with tight bowling from Davies and Newport skipper Carter.

However, with only 14 scored off 9 overs, Davies got one to lift outside off-stump to Denning and he was caught at slip for 10. As the mercurial Elwyn Toozer strode to the wicket in Tonto's expanding headband, the sun made its first appearance.

Dean Thomas, still easing his way into his new club, found the batting conditions very different from the previous week when he made 50 glorious runs, and it proved hard work when in the 19th over and with Davies in his final over, he carved the ball out to the fielder at point where he was caught for 16.

James Griffiths went 3 balls later again to Davies, leaving Wanderers wobbling on 44-4. Tom Ridgwell joined Toozer at the crease with the wicket now seemingly getting firmer in the sunshine.

Both batsmen took time to get used to things out in the middle, with Toozer pushing into spaces to keep the scoreboard ticking.

These two are now building up a more than useful partnership against the bowling of Jarvis and Watkins, and indeed batted superbly until Toozer charged down the wicket to Newport's Matt Bryant in the 36th over and was stumped for a fine 47, putting on a partnership of 94 with Ridgwell.

He in turn marched on to his second 50 for the club, hitting boundaries at will until bowled by Bryant late on for a fine 59.

A late flourish from Andy Furnham at the end with a quickfire 20 ensured that Wanderers totalled 184 all out in the 44th over, Furnham being last man out. Newport's Andrew Davies took 4-25 off his 10 overs and Matt Bryant 5-14.

The Newport innings started with John Rowlett and Howard Davies opening the batting with Wanderers Dave Morgan bowling at the Apartments end for the first time in 10 years.

Indeed, both batsmen started well against the tight bowling of Morgan and Furnham, Rowlett in particular, cutting to the boundary until in the 13th over with Newport on 34, Morgan bowled Davies for 12.

Morgan was now on the march also bowling Keyse for a duck and trapping Rowlett lbw for 21.

Newport were falling behind any sort of run-rate with Mike Ashton tying up one end, Ridgwell and later James Griffiths, both left armers, producing good spells from the tree end.

Only Jason Bachelor with 28 and Andrew Davies with 22 produced any further resistance to the Wanderers bowling attack, as Newport were bowled out for 128 in the 40th over giving Wanderers the victory by 56 runs.

Dave Morgan finished his 10 over spell with 3-22, with Ashton 2-35 from his 10, and 15-year-old James Griffiths finishing his 6 over spell with 2-25.
