MAY 31, 2009, brought Danny Jones, 17, from Barry Island the fight of his life within his chosen sport of Mauy Thai boxing.
Trained by the legendary Master Peter Stewart, Danny was spending many hours building stamina and perfecting his technique in readiness for his title bid against a 21-year-old Eagles Cardiff fighter at the Heath Hospital Sports Centre Cardiff.
As both fighters came to the ring to the deafening chant of their rival supporters, it was obvious that Danny's opponent had got himself into a state of physical readiness and this was going to test Danny to the full.
As the referee called the fighters to the ring centre to shake hands, both were ready for the job in hand and the first round was fought with each testing the others' resolve and ability, some hard punches and kicks were thrown but passed without any serious damage to either fighter.
Round two saw the pace of the fight increase with the balance of aggression moving between fighters, many punch and kick combinations were thrown with both fighters being thrown to the floor, but by the end of round two the points were in Danny's favour.
Round three was a punishing round for both fighters, knees, kicks and punches were aimed by both fighters in a serious attempt to finish the other with no quarter given by either fighter – this was a testament to both fighters' conditioning and the amount of preparation put in.
Again young Danny proved himself to be the more consistent fighter and took the points.
Round four was more of the same and the supporters must have been asking themselves how much more punishment could either fighter take. Danny's opponent delivered two spinning back fists which were not agreed prior to the fight, therefore making them illegal techniques, but they were allowed to pass without the intervention of the referee.
The round finished with Danny Jones in a two round lead, on points the final round to be decisive, but the possibility of a knockout was ever present by either fighter.
Both fighters came out for the final round with a fine show of sportsmanship. A nod of acknowledgement and handshake and the final round blasted off.
The determination by both men was a credit to them, and both were trying to end the fight by a knockout, Danny using all of the skills taught to him by Master Stewart which was enabling him to fight off his opponent.
Danny produced a spinning back fist of his own, but was reprimanded by the referee who made a very unpopular decision and deducted a point. This however did not influence the end result and Danny Jones was announced as a very worthy winner.
The writer, David Tolcher-James, would like to remind Mauy Thai followers that in the report on Danny's last fight, he said 'watch this space, this boy's got a bright future in the noble arts' and he would be reporting on a title victory in the near future!
If you want to be the best then train with the best at Eagles Gym, and benefit from the expert tuition of Master Peter Stewart.
If you possess the raw ability and are willing to be moulded into a champion like Danny Jones and many before him there is only one place to train.
Congratulations go to young Danny Jones, the latest Eagles champion. Well done Danny from all of your Eagles teammates and from all fight fans.
