THERE was joy for two Vale schools at the Cardiff & the Vale Schools U14 & U16 A Cup Final at Jenner Park.
Bro Morgannwg U16 (years 9 & 10) girls have had a wonderful run of success in recent years, winning that section for three consecutive years from 2005 to 2008. Their U14 squads were also successful in 2007, claiming both sections – and that year the school went on to create history at the NASUWT Cymru Welsh Schools Cup Finals by becoming the first school to win three sections.
2008 was a disappointing year but the Barry school bounced back this year to qualify all four teams for the A Cup Final – Cardiff High School was the only other school to match that feat – and went on to claim not only a fourth U16 girls title in five years but also to take the U16 boys section for the first time, with both teams now going on to represent Cardiff & the Vale at the NASUWT Cymru Welsh Schools Cup Final at Brecon on Wednesday, July 8.
To win this competition, a school does not necessarily have to have star athletes, though it may help. What they do need is pupils who can finish consistently in the leading positions in both the A and B string competitions.
The Bro U16 boys’ success followed that formula. Only year 10 James Glaves (80m hurdles) won an A string competition but his teammates figured prominently in the top three positions and were worthy winners, finishing ahead of the defending title-holders, Whitchurch, and the much fancied Cardiff High team, which claimed second place after a recount.
The Bro Morgannwg U16 girls squad is not strong in the track events but on the field it is a different matter, albeit in a district where the girls’ standard in jumps and throws does not match the strength in the boys’ sides.
A and B victories for Shanelle Edwards & Zoe Edwards in the long jump, Lia Thomas & Harriet Lewis in the shot, and Fern Mason and Becky Jones in the javelin brought a 21 point score on each occasion, helping the girls to victory by seven points from Llanishen.
The other Vale school to claim a victory did so in unusual circumstances. On the day, the result of the U14 girls section was declared as a win for Whitchurch on 167.5 points, with Cardiff High second on 166 points and Llantwit third with 162.5 points, the five-point spread underlining the tightness of the competition.
All the on-the-day results are provisional and have to be checked. That checking process changed the result in fairly dramatic fashion, with Whitchurch dropping to third on 169 points and Cardiff High and Llantwit tying on 174.
Llantwit will share the Cardiff & the Vale Schools U14 Cup with Cardiff High at the Presentation Evening on September 8, but a tie break had to be used to decide which of the two schools will compete in the NASUWT Cymru Cup Final, and which will contest the Plate Final at the same venue on the same day.
The tie break is the number of individual A string winners. Cardiff High had three – the 200, high jump and long jump – but Llantwit, thanks to the efforts of Lucy Tarrant (800), Megan Osborne (1500), Lizzie Davies (discus) and Danielle Weston (javelin), had four and so qualify for the Cup Final in Brecon for the first time since 1997.
Three Vale schools – Bro Morgannwg, Barry & Llantwit – contested the U14 boys final but they had to settle for minor positions behind the powerful Cardiff High and Llanishen squads.
