Centurions suffer major setback

SULLY CENTURIONS 1st XI suffered a major setback last Saturday at home to Bridgend, when the batting failed to reach a very moderate total set by the opposition.

Centurions though remain top of the Premier League and the Captain's strength will no doubt soon get them back on track so that normal service is resumed.

Bridgend batted first at Sully on Saturday and were soon in trouble as skipper Ryan Sylvester produced a superb spell of bowling.

He and Lloyd Smith destroyed the Bridgend top order, reducing them to 38-6 and it looked like an early finish.

At 52 Gareth Sullivan superbly ran out Kinsella but then a fine 47 by Towell backed by Weaver with 18 changed the match, and enabled Bridgend to reach 121 all out not a total one would have thought would cause any trouble for the Sully batting.

Ryan Sylvester bowled magnificently to return figures of 10 overs, 7 maidens, 4 wickets for just 4 runs.

But Centurions' innings never got going as wickets tumbled from the start, with Weaver bowling a superb spell, taking 5-28.

Former Centurion and Glamorgan player Mike O'Shea claimed three wickets and only Huw Williams (20) and Gareth Sullivan (10) reached double figures as Centurions were shot out for just 76 which included 25 extras.

Bridgend 121 all out. S Towell 47 not out, A Weaver 18. R Sylvester 4-4, L Smith 3-26.

Centurions 76 all out. H Williams 20, G Sullivan 10. A Weaver 5-28, M O'Shea 3-23.

SUNDAY WIN

The Sunday XI recorded a fine victory over Caerphilly Druids at Sully.

The visitors batted first on a very windy day against a very young Centurions side and reached 169 all out with Owain Sullivan taking 4 wickets and young Ben Callow 3.

Fields with 48 was top scorer for Druids.

Centurions made a whirlwind start in reply, as Owain 'Loose' Sullivan, in a hurry to get to his rehearsals, hit a quick-fire 12, Mick Fisher standing at the other end admiring it.

The backbone of the innings was Christian Bruce with a fine 77, aided by Shay Ellis (25) and young Adam Gilliatt with an excellent 28.

Caerphilly 169 all out. C Fields 48. O Sullivan 4-23, B Callow 3-30.

Centurions 172-7. C Bruce 77 not out, A Gilliatt 28, S Ellis 25.
