First league win for Barry 1st XV!

BARRY 3

LLANDAFF NORTH 0

ON Saturday the Barry 1st XV achieved their first league win of the season with a hard-earned victory over league leaders, Llandaff North.

The amount of rain that had fallen over the previous few days had made Barry's main pitch unplayable - but with one of the adjacent pitches deemed suitable, the match referee agreed to the match taking place.

After the previous weekend's misfortune when the club was unable, due to injuries, illness and other commitments, to field a XV to play Taffs Well the club coaches were more than pleased to be able to field a full squad of 22 players.

The game started with Barry playing into a gale force wind and persistent rain and these conditions were to dictate the pattern of the game with forward play dominating the afternoon's proceedings.

With captain Martin Tanner - becoming used to front row play - leading from the front, and with the lineout work of the Campbell brothers and Lyndon James providing good ball, the Barry pack were able to control play for most of the game.

The weather and the defences of both sides prevented any tries from being scored and the only points came towards the end of the game when centre Chris Cummings, after Barry had spurned two earlier kicks, converted a penalty goal to gain his team's first win and precious league points.

This was a well-deserved win for the local club and, hopefully, it will kick start the season leading to similar results from the remaining league fixtures.

Next Saturday Barry travel to Cilfynydd, kick off 2.30pm, with the coach leaving the clubhouse at 12.30pm.
