THE season came to a close at Cadoxton Bowling Club with a new addition to their calendar, a competition for the Memorial Trophy.

This was played as a Two-bowl Pairs knockout competition.

The pairs were drawn and seeded for a man and a lady to make up each pair.

The best of three sets deciding the winners.

The weather was kind and an enjoyable day was had by all, including the losers.

The final four pairs to make the semi-finals were: Jim Stacey/Wendy Chamberlain (A) and Ewan Heppenstall/Chris Hope (B)

Theresa Clarke/Howard Craven (C), Linda Morgan-Groves/ Don Kuhnell (D).

In the first of the games the both sides were skipped by the ladies and with regular club leads Jim Stacey and Ewan Heppenstall competing with accuracy, the first set finished with a tie with both the ladies playing a part.

This meant that a win by either side in the next set would put them through.

Although Wendy Chamberlain continued with her good form, Chris Hope had a superb game to ensure a final place.

A high standard was reached from Linda and Theresa, the leads in the other match, and with Don producing some good shots the first set went in his favour.

However Howard improved in the second set with some take-out bowls and produced a win.

In the third set (C) won two ends from the best of three to reach the final.

The final started with all eight bowls within 18 inches of the jack on the first end with two shots going to Howard’s rink.

This good play continued with rink (C) successful to win the first set.

Pair (B) perked up in the next set and with Ewan laying good bowls and Chris producing her form from the semi-final the required win was completed, thus ensuring the need of a deciding set.

After losing the first end Pair (C) needed a win on the next and although being shot down Howard trailed the jack but it stopped against another opposing bowl to give the trophy to a well deserved Chris and Ewan.
