EATS, Beats & Treats descended upon Barry Island last weekend which meant a switch to the Nells Point course for Barry Island parkrun.

The course takes runners out onto Nells Point and around to Jackson’s Bay using the paths on top of the point before returning only to do it all again…three times.

Of the 167 people that ran, jogged and walked the 5km course, 41 were First Timers.

These included members of Barry’s Seriously Mad Runners Couch to 5K group who, over the past 9 weeks have followed the NHS C25K programme which takes participants from no running to completing a 5km run.

The runners had to complete three run/walk sessions a week building up to session three on week nine which was Barry Island parkrun.

It was a new personal Best Time for Martyn Driscoll of Mynyddwyr De Cymru who crossed the line in a time of 17:51, just ahead of junior runner Alfie Davies in 18:22.

Third place went to Ross Purchase of Cornelly Striders in 18:32.

For the ladies it was Susan Bowes of Les Croupiers RC taking first place in a time of 23:21 ahead of Andrea Hurman of Penarth & Dinas Runners in 23:43.

Third place for the ladies was Catlin Williams of Seriously Mad Runners in 23:46.

As demonstrated by the Couch to 5K runners, parkrun is free and open to anyone to run, jog or walk their way along the 5km route and was made possible by a team of 25 volunteers who were, Mandy Barrington, John Magee, Lisa Cleary, Yvonne Williams, Lyn Evans, Samuel Broughton, Ian Thorne, Dave Shields, Claire Thorne, Ben Butler-Madden, Kirstine Hughes, Helen Archer, Denise Aplin, Leanne Gallagher, Michelle Davies, Paul Kehl, Harriet Kehl, Michael Gibbs, Natalie Hayes, Joanne Bagwell, Carolyn Hepburn, Rachel Gibbs, Sarah Western, Emma White and Catherine Pearce.

Barry Island parkrun is organised and run entirely by volunteers. If you would like to help out or get involved with Barry Island parkrun, then please get in touch with the team at barryislandoffice@parkrun.com
