SULLY (the Villagers’) Bowling Club continue to punch well above their weight, and there is plenty of that.

On Wednesday they entertained Barry Romilly who are a bigger division 1 club to their division 3 status.

With this week’s 8 automatic picks it was a very different sully side took on the challenge.

Early on two rinks set up a strong base to encourage the others to keep their heads down and bowl for the team not just themselves. At 6 ends sully where 28-10 up thanks to the Doug Hotchkiss rink who were 13-0 up.

On 12 ends it was 2 up and 2 down but 45-33 in front and through to the end it stayed steady with Sully getting a 10-2 points win for a 64-55 win with 2 rinks up.

E Pryer, B Dascombe, H Thomas, H Levick Jones 9-18 D Davies, K Mahoney, A Thomas, D Curtis 12-20 J Hubbard, P Neale, A Smith, D Edwards 21-9 and top rink again A Kelly, S Phillips, T Murphy, D Hotchkiss 22-8.

On Saturday they travelled to Roath Park to play Fairoak to whom they had lost last year and a good strength side where a bit more optimistic after recent form.

On a dry brown green, it took a while for the Villagers to get the hang of it.

After 5 ends it was squire and on 10 ends they led by only 8 As the heat took effect, Sully’s quality shone as well and started to ease away on 3 rinks 62-44.

As had been the case at Llantwit Major it took a last end shoot out on the Griffiths rink to get a 1 shot win and secure all 14 points with all rinks up away from home.

A very, very good show on a really hot day when the S4C cameras turned up to take some footage.

A Smith, D Curtin, M Hardy, B Griffiths 18-17, G John, R Fitzjohn, A Thomas, D Curtis 29-9 A Rees, H Levick Jones, D Hotchkiss, F Phillips 20-15, top rink B Curtis, P Neale, T Murphy, D Edwards 36-11, 103-52.

The fun continues this week with a trip to Barry Central on Wednesday and the visit of St Albans on Saturday.

It would seem with the competition for places now, bowlers are taking a lot more care and good turn outs on a Monday nights practise is a must to make the side grow. It’s showing the results.
