THE Captain’s Charity Day at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is one of several opportunities for the club captain Mike Chick to raise funds for his nominated Charity ‘The City Hospice Cardiff’.

The members and visitors turned out in huge numbers with all available tee times filled and which produced a huge total of 136 entries.

The event enjoyed excellent weather with the sun shining on a course presented in immaculate condition.

The competition took the form of a team with the best three scores to count but also during the round the players took on challenge after challenge with the opportunity to pick up a prize for nearest the pin at the three par 3 holes and unusually nearest the line which was marked down the centre of the long 14th hole. Before and after play there was a further chance to

dig deep into the pockets with a putting competition on the practice green and attempts to pitch a ball into a waiting bucket which seemed to have a rubber bottom frustrating those who managed to hit the target. All in good fun with the winner of course the charity.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and club members there were some excellent prizes on offer and this extended to the raffle which was very well supported.

The winners of the team prize with an excellent score of 131 points were Craig Regan, Jared Thomas, Viv Williams and Dave Iles.

Runners up with another good score of 124 points were Sandra Champ, Lesley Sherrard, Karen Ball and Lyn Williams just ahead of Derek Lewis, Steve Cleaver, Glyn Jones and Russell Owens who were very close behind with 123 points.

The prizes for nearest the pin on the par 3 holes were won by Kevin Knowles (2nd hole), Derek Lewis (9th hole) and Gary Butt (15th hole) and Mark Gallivan took the honours for being nearest the line on the 14 hole.

The club captain was clearly delighted with the support he had received on the day and gave particular thanks to everyone who had entered a team in the competition and those who had given so generously throughout the day. Early indications that £1700 would be added to the ongoing total raised for the charity throughout the year.

The captain also thanked Lucy Sellick Head Green Keeper and her hard working team for their skill in presenting the course in superb condition.

He also expressed his appreciation of all the club members, particularly the Ladies Section who had undertaken various roles throughout a long and very successful day.

He also thanked the club bar and catering staff for their usual efficiency throughout the event.

As always the real winners on the day would be the charity and during the year there will be many further opportunities to raise funds for this very worthy cause.

A truly remarkable day and the real winners were the two charities with a significant boost to their funds.
