SULLY Sports Men’s Bowls Club made the short trip last Wednesday on a sunny evening to neighbours Sully.

Both teams were successful on 2 rinks, but the hosts won on aggregate by the slender margin of 7 shots.

A Middleton’s rink scored a 22-17 win, despite a great fightback over the last 3 ends where the hosts took 10 shots.

K Romans’ rink were behind until the 11th end, and even at the 13th, but in the final 5 ends they outscored the host by 10 shots to 2, to win 18-10.

R Roberts’ rink were always behind, except when they led 5-4 on the 5th end, in a very low scoring and tight tussle, and Sully held on to win 18-13.

C Coomber’s rink fared badly, but on 5-4 down on the 8th rink, then they held 4, possibly more, shots on the 9th, but home skip A Jones’ last wood, took a wicked wick from a short wood and careered into the jack to win the end.

That set the course of the rest of the game, as the visitors struggled to win an end, with any luck favouring the hosts, and at the end the result was 22-7 in Sully’s favour.

Rink Scores:

R Knight, M Stafford, J Kirk, C Coomber 7-22;

A Fitt, D Burbridge, R Matthews, A Middleton 22-17;

P Holland, P Collier, G Currie, R Roberts 13-18;

J Harries, B Daniels, R Giddings, K Romans 18-10.

On Saturday, the Sports faced the daunting trip to the Arms Park to play Cardiff Athletic in the PG1s, and came away with a rare, but well merited, win by an aggregate of 82-76.

Level after 5 ends at 24-24, behind at 10 ends (37-42) and 15ends (53-60), all the Sports’ rinks dug in, and took the last 6 ends by 13 shots to take the overall aggregate by 6 shots.

Roy Roberts’ rink found the green difficult in the early stages, and the Athletic led 12-1 after 6 ends, and 21-5 after 13 ends, and the Sports’ fightback that brought the aggregate back by 6 shots over the last 8 ends, played an important part in the eventual overall team aggregate.

Rob Matthews’ rink led for 1 end only, the 1st, and slowly fell behind to be 22-9 down after 17 ends, upon which they found something as they won all the final 4 ends, scoring 6 shots in the process, and as on Roberts’ rink, this last minute surge in scoring was so important in the overall picture.

K Romans’ rink played superbly throughout and led from the 1st end til the last, with a very fine, and so much needed, victory by 13 shots.

Lee Romans’ rink also put on a terrific performance, and led from the outset. Looking comfortable with a 21-9 lead after 16 ends, the Sports found themselves under pressure as the Athletic reduced the arrears to 5 shots with 2 ends to play.

With all the other rinks finished, and watching the outcome, putting even more pressure on, the Sports gained 1 shot on the penultimate end, and secured, not only the rink win, but the overall aggregate win, by posting 4 shots on the final end.

Rink Scores:

R Knight, J Kirk, G Currie, R Matthews 15-22;

M Stafford, A Thompson, A Collard, R Roberts 15-25;

D Austin, L Adams, C Coomber, K Romans 25-12;

R Giddings, M Morgan, G Brown, L Romans 27-17.
