FOLLOWING last week’s bye week Cadoxton met Belle Vue away in a Munro Cup Match, in Penarth on 23 May.

Although Cadoxton players should be used to playing on a heavy green, this was even worse, and they failed to make an impact, losing three of the rinks.

Howard Craven had the only success on the rink skipped by B Bagwell. In a slow scoring match the visitors slowly but surely edged into the lead winning 12 of the ends eleven of which were singles.

Holding an eight shot advantage going into the final end they were not too concerned about conceding a ‘4’.

Kelvin Chedgzoy played a man short on his rink against Trevor Ford and seemed to have overcome the shortage by taking a 10-2 lead by the half way stage.

However they were dead beat in the later stages and went behind for the only time on the final end.

Another close match was played between skips Derek Jeffries and C Scammell.

Four singles by the home side were cancelled out with a ‘4’ and a ‘2’ gave the visitors the lead. This was lost during the next four ends to tail 6-11, only to draw level with two ends remaining. A ‘2’ left the visitors behind going into the final end, but were unfortunate to improve on a single on the last.

Steve Clarke’s rink fought hard in the early stages, and after ten ends were just one shot behind at 6-7 on the following end a ‘4’ was conceded and as they tired a further ‘4’ took the game away from them

The Cardiff & District Municipal League started with a home match for Cadoxton against Cowbridge last Saturday.

Kelvin Chedgzoy led the top rink of the day with a big match winning score against the experienced Roger Barwick.

The visitors scored two early singles but were put under the hammer with 12 successful ends for the home side, which included a ‘5’ and four ‘3’s, taking the score to 27-2 on the 14th end.

Alarmingly six of the remaining ends brought 12 shots in favour of the visitors.

Don Kuhnell skipped another successful rink against Norman Wilkinson. Even so this was not an easy win with good play from all of the visiting players, too keep the score tight.

Especially after they took three singles on the first three ends, with the home side holding 6, 5 and 4 ‘seconds’ respectively.

Nevertheless after 11 ends the scores were level at 6-6, but the home advantage started to tell and just three singles were conceded in the remaining ends whilst 11 were added to the home score.

The rink skipped by Derek Jeffries had a slow start and trailed 3-8 after 8 ends. A good spell brought them back into the game when a ‘4’ gave them a 14-11 advantage.

However only one further score, of ‘3’ was managed, whilst a ‘5’ against and a run of singles took the win for the visitors.

Howard Craven met opposing skip Dave Snelling and trailed 1-8 after eight ends.

A spirited reply took them into an 11-9 advantage, which was improved to 15-10 before dropping nine shots during the next three ends. A ‘2 on the last was not enough.
