SULLY Sports Men’s Bowls Club hosted neighbours the Murch, Dinas Powys in their latest Munro Cup fixture, on May 30 and fought hard to take a 74-66 aggregate win.

The home rinks skipped by G Brown and K Romans had very close defeats with the scores close throughout.

C Coomber’s rink ran away in the 1st 10 ends to lead 23-2, and held off a Murch attempted fightback to eventually win by 16 shots.

A Middleton’s rink seemed to be cruising to a big win, as they led 10-1 after 8 ends, only to be level 2 ends later as the visitors scored a 5 & 4, and it was nip and tuck thereafter with the scores again level with 2 ends left.

Middleton took 2 shots on the penultimate end, only for the Murch to grab 2 of their own on the final end for a justified draw.

Rink Scores:

R Knight, J Harries, L Adams, A Middleton 17-17;

M Morgan, A Fitt, G Currie, C Coomber 29-13;

P Holland, P Collier, C Spillane, G Brown 16-18;

R Giddings, D Burridge, M Stafford, K Romans 12-18.

Last Saturday, the Sports returned to PG1 action, hosting St Josephs, and “had a bad day at the office” only winning on 1 rink, losing the others heavily, to suffer a 65-88 aggregate loss.

Graham Brown’s rink raced into a 6 shot lead in the opening 3 ends, but only recorded 5 more singles in the remaining 18 ends to go down by 15 shots.

Lee Romans’ rink fared almost the same leading after 3 ends, but only winning 5 more ends, and also lost by 15 shots.

Roy Roberts’ rink suffered in the early stages, didn’t score in the opening 6 ends, and by then were 16 shots down. The fightback saw them outscore the Joes in the last 15 ends, but not enough to avoid overall defeat by 11 shots.

The Sports only highlight was on Rob Matthews’ rink, who led from the 1st end, were 4 shots up after 5 ends, and the same at 10 ends, but only allowed the visitors 3 shots over the last 11 ends to stretch away for an 18 shot win.

Rink Scores:

A Middleton, J Kirk, C Coomber, R Matthews 27-9;

R Knight, D Austin, C Spillane, G Brown 11-26;

L Adams, B Whyman, K Romans, L Romans 12-27;

P Holland, M Stafford, G Currie, R Roberts. 15-26.

On Wednesday, the Sports make their shortest journey of the season to play village neighbours Sully in a Munro Cup fixture, and travel again on Saturday for their Private Green fixture at Cardiff Athletic.

Cowbridge were the visitors to the Sully Sports Ladies Bowls Club, on Fri 1st June, in the Evening League, and returned home with an aggregate 1 shot win.

Sully Sports won both rinks but as they could only field 3 players on one of them, the final rink score was reduced in line with the League’s laws, with the result going to Cowbridge by the narrowest of margins.

The early exchanges were relatively even, but the hosts’ canny bowling got them into a lead of 6 shots after 8 ends, and frustrated the Sports attempts of a late fightback.

Rink Scores:

S Phillips, M Smith, M Dare, Carol Jenkins 22-15;

R Williams, L Woodcock, Stef Parker 12-20.*

* home score reduced by 25% as only fielded 3 players.
