BARRY Romilly Bowls Club played their second game of the season away at the Murch green Dinas Powis in group 45 of the Carruthers Shield on Saturday having already beaten Belle Vue the previous week.

On a lovely sunny afternoon ideal for a game of bowls the game began with the ‘Rom’ confident of another win playing a Murch side way below them in the CML leagues.

It was taking Romilly a while to adjust to the pace of the green as the first five ends went to the home side who held a two-shot advantage.

Over the next five ends the ‘Rom’ started to improve their game and by the end of the tenth had moved into a 16-shot lead with the rink of Phil Gershenson, Paul Swannick, Roger Jones and skip Brian Foscolo the main protagonists taking a nine-shot advantage.

Another Romilly rink holding an advantage at this stage was that of Dave Noble, Gwynne Rees, Gary Eastment and Jeff Wright with a four shot lead, also Mike Doyle’s rink of Kelvyn Mills, Terry Bloomfield and Clive Collins held a similar lead.

It was only Graham Cogbill’s rink that were behind but the deficit was only one shot leaving Romilly leading at the halfway stage 44-28.

It was important for the ‘Rom’ to push on to ensure a victory in order that they meet their next opponents

Gilfach Goch on high and hopefully progress into the knockout stages.

The only rink to take the initiative was the rink of Alan Bannister, Dave Francis, Mel Newman and skip Graham Cogbill who went from the one down to ten up by end 15, the other three rinks were struggling as the Murch fought to reduce their deficit which at this point they had managed to hold the ‘Rom’ but could not cut their deficit which had now risen to 26 shots thanks to Cogbill’s rink.

With the final six ends to go the ‘Rom’ although seemingly home and dry still needed to hold their concentration.

The final ends went without any unexpected changes with Romilly running out winners by a comfortable 34-shot margin 86 – 52.

With two wins in their Group Romilly have a more difficult game next week when they take on Gilfach Goch to see who takes the qualification slot for knockout stage.

Rink Scores:-

B Foscolo 26 v 14

M Doyle 15 v 14

J Wright 22 v 12

G Cogbill 23 v 12

The Romilly Munro Cup side played Penarth Rectory Road last Wednesday losing narrowly on all four rinks first time that members can remember such a reverse.

The Romilly ‘A’ team are struggling with games as many other club’s second teams are short of numbers even the SVLA Cup has been reduced to just three teams.

There needs to be resurgence in bowls and get players to take up or return to an enjoyable sport so all clubs need a recruitment drive to encourage new members.
