THE damp and drab winter seemed a long way back as the sun shone at Wenvoe Castle and the busy schedule of club competitions and social events finally got into full swing.
Incoming club captain Mike Chick hosted a very well attended Captain’s Inaugural Ball and looked forward to a busy and successful year in office.
In particular he welcomed Lesley Sherrard as his vice club captain and congratulated her on being the first woman in the history of the golf club to hold this position and similarly next year when she becomes the club captain.
The club also welcomed a new head greenkeeper, Lucy Sellick, who took up her position in early May and brings considerable experience after having worked at Celtic Manor and Saltford Golf Clubs.
The popular mixed competitions got under way and the first, the Ashton Trophy was won by Sue Dayananda and Cliff White with an impressive 37 points.
This was quickly followed by the Mixed Open which attracted a huge field from Golf clubs far and wide.
The winners of the Visitors Prize were Paul and Samantha Edwards from Glamorganshire Golf Club who scored an excellent 38 points. The prize for members of Wenvoe Castle was won by Russell Owens and Karen Ball with 36 points.
The Club Captain Members’ Day open to both Ladies and Gentlemen and enthusiastically supported by the membership with the tees fully booked throughout a busy day.
Players were glad to see the halfway house for some welcome refreshments on a very warm and sunny day kindly donated by the club captain Mike.
The day was also an opportunity to raise funds for the captain’s nominated charity City Hospice Cardiff and it hoped to raise significant funds throughout the year for this very worthy cause.
Next weekend the club have been given the honour to host the Welsh Open Youth Championships which will run from the 1st to 3rd June.
There will be over 150 top quality players from all over the world competing for the prestigious trophy and the choice of Wenvoe Castle clearly reflects the quality of the course and venue.
Spectators and visitors are welcome to watch the best young players in action and no doubt some who will go on to join the professional ranks in the future.
Wenvoe Castle has opportunities for membership for players of all abilities and are keen to welcome new lady and junior members.
There are special arrangements for those new to golf and the club professional will provide lessons for those wishing to try out this very healthy outdoor sport and in doing so meet new friends in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
