JOE Laing notched a top draw double to add to Reece Lewis' opener as Saints won the esteemed Barry Cup.

On a glorious day at Jenner Park St Athan came in as Premier Division leaders, while Llantwit Major came in as Division Two champions having won every game they have played this season in a league and cup until this past Sunday.

Saints started brightly and Bradley Young marauded down the left flank to combine with Josh Harfoot to fashion a half chance wide.

Young again caused problems from left back as he combined with Karl Steel to win an early corner that saw Nicky Cox head just wide.

Llantwit Major fired back and their left winger cut in off his wing to force Saints keeper James Andrews into a good low stop with his feet.

The game continues to ebb and flow and Saints Karl Steel then got himself into a decent position and his low strike was comfortably held by the Llantwit stopper.

On twenty minutes St Athan finally made the breakthrough, a corner was won and set piece expert Reece Lewis saw his corner fly straight in to give Saints the lead.

This kick-started Llantwit and they looked to apply pressure for the rest of the half but their final ball just couldn't quite be delivered.

Llantwit pushed on for a leveller and just before half time Andrews was called on in Saints goal to produce a fine save from a finely struck long range effort.

At half time Saints manager Bill Laing had a reshuffle and it proved dividends.

Saints started the second period brightly and attacked with pace. Once again Reece Lewis saw a corner cleared off the line before Saints doubled their lead.

Steel picked the ball up down the left and pulled the ball back to Joe Laing just outside the area on the left hand side, Laing's first touch was breath-taking, taking defenders out of the game, before unleashing an unstoppable drive past the Llantwit keeper.

Llantwit threw caution to the wind now in the final 25 minutes and soon carved an excellent chance but saw the ball cannon back off the upright.

Llantwit kept up the pressure and Andrews was forced to make another great stopped at point blank range.

St Athan broke quickly and Steel's lightening pace saw him in on goal, defender on his tail, but Steel couldn't find the net and saw the keeper make the save with his legs.

With seven minutes remaining, Llantwit won a penalty. Up stepped former St Athan forward Josh Morgan and last season's top scorer, to dispatch the spot kick past Andrews to register against his former team.

Llantwit were back in it and poured forward but found Saints back line of Pugh, Mortimore, Cox and Young in fantastic form.

Then with four minutes remaining St Athan sealed the cup with their third and decisive goal. Laing picked up the ball on the right of the area, a turn on a sixpence saw to move into the six yard box and beat the keeper with a strike off the outside of his right boot to send Saints supporters into raptures.

The final whistle cued great celebrations for St Athan, Bradley Young was named man of the match and co captains Jordan Mortimore and Nicky Cox lifted the famous trophy. A tremendous performance by St Athan on a day to remember.
