BARRY RFC secured a bonus point win away to Clwb Rygbi last weekend, with their 32-18 win seeing them move up to joint third in the table.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, Barry were made to work hard for their victory against stubborn opponents who threatened to derail their progress for large parts of the game.

Clwb got off to the best possible start after early Barry pressure was stemmed. A long 22 drop out by Clwb saw play taken close to the Barry line, where a penalty award turned into a converted penalty try as Barry transgressed.

The early setback galvanised the visitors, who used their possession to gain territory despite coming second best at the set piece. A penalty took Barry into the home 22, with Tom Perry collecting after a forward drive and crashing through the defence to score under the posts. Kyle Barros had the easiest of conversions to bring the scores level.

As both sides settled into the game, Barry briefly took the lead through a Barros penalty, before an infringement at the restart allowed Clwb to draw level through a penalty of their own.

The tie continued to ebb and flow as both sides added unconverted tries – the first through Barry's Luke O'Sullivan – before Clwb levelled once more.

But Wayne Jones caught the restart to take play deep into the Clwb half, finding Einan Scott whose cross kick to the corner was gathered by Dave Provis to score a well executed try. Barros' successful kick ensured Barry moved to 22-15 in front.

There was still time in the half though for Clwb to set up an attack, and with Barry again penalised they took the option of three points to reduce the deficit to four going into the break.

Barry came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and kept play in the Clwb half, with the home defence doing everything to keep Barry out despite losing two players to the sin bin.

But the hosts improved despite their numerical disadvantage and began to put Barry under pressure, only for Baross to eventually add another penalty to extend the lead to 25-18.

As Clwb began to tire, the bonus point try that Barry had so desperately sought finally came. Tom Perry crossed for his second try of the game, with Baross again adding the extras to help Barry pull clear.

The win takes Barry to joint third in the table, and are set to take on both sides above them in the coming weeks.

It was also an excellent day for the second XV ,who travelled to unbeaten Rumney and came away with a bonus point win by 24-5. Two tries and conversions from Dylan Robertson were added to by John Miles and Harry Moyle for an emphatic victory.

The next fixtures will take place on March 3 when the first XV take on Cambrian Welfare and the second XV meet St. Peters. Both games are at home and kick off at 2.30pm.

The club lottery was finally won last Saturday, with lucky winner Joel Williams matching the winning numbers of 3, 9, 10 and 24 to scoop the £8,750 prize. Two further ticket holders claimed £10 for matching three numbers.

The lottery starts again this week with a jackpot of £1,000.
