Sam Curran will join brother Tom in England’s Twenty20 squad after being called up for the next month’s Trans-Tasman Series.

The 19-year-old Surrey all-rounder has been drafted after the decision to rest Joe Root, who has withdrawn following a gruelling winter schedule.

England may not have added additional cover had Ben Stokes been free to join up for the New Zealand leg of the tri-series, but he is due to appear in Bristol Magistrates’ Court on February 13 – the date of his proposed comeback match – on a charge of affray.

Curran will join up with his new team-mates later this week ahead of Sunday’s final one-day international against Australia in Perth.

The T20 campaign then begins with a warm-up match against a Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra with internationals in Hobart, Melboure, Wellington and Hamilton.

Brother Tom, 22, made his England bow in June and has gone on to feature in all three formats – including two Ashes Tests.

Unlike his sibling, Sam bats and bowls left-handed and he has only just returned from a six-week stint representing Auckland in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition.

He has played a total of 43 matches in the sprint format, taking 40 wickets and scoring 449 runs at a strike-rate of 118.15.
