BARRY RFC suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of St Peter's last Saturday, as a lacklustre display cost them badly in a game they would have expected to win.

With ex-international centre Mark Ring as coach, it was taken as a given that the Rocks would be keen to move the ball around and the early minutes of the tie confirmed this.

Putting the Barry defence to the test with their pace and wind advantage, it was not long before St Peter's reached the Barry 22 and earned a penalty to take the lead.

It was not long before St Peter's doubled their advantage, with the Barry scrum sloppily conceding another penalty which was comfortably dispatched.

But Barry finally came to life as they attacked from the restart, and following a good move upfield forced the Rocks to concede a penalty which Kyle Barros slotted over to reduce the arrears. A further penalty opportunity followed moments later, but this time he was unable to find the target.

Again the hosts punished Barry as a counter-attack resulted in a penalty, enabling St Peter's to expand their lead to six once again, before another infringement allowed them to increase the advantage to 12-3 as half-time loomed, following another successful home penalty.

Having soaked up most of the pressure, Barry would have felt confident of turning the scoreline around with the wind in their favour during the second period.

But this was not to be the case in the early minutes as basic errors crept into their game and chances were missed.

It took a piece of individual brilliance from Barros to stop the rot when he set off on a dazzling run which took him into the home 22. When halted, he found White in support who released Provis to cross for a superb try out wide. Barros' missed conversion left Barry within three points of the Rocks.

The errors crept back in however and despite being camped in the home 22, the Rocks' defence proved difficult to break down.

Barros fired over another penalty to reduce the deficit to one point with time remaining, but ultimately Barry could not do enough to breach the hosts' defence as they slipped to their third defeat of the season.

With the Autumn Internationals in full swing, Barry's next game takes place on December 9 when they entertain Llanishen in a league fixture.

This date coincides with the club's annual Christmas draw. The club have had difficulty in distributing tickets due to the recent lack of rugby at the club, and tickets are available at the bar for resale on evenings and weekends.

Both the Scotland and Wales games will be screened live on the big screen from 1.30pm this Saturday.

Last week's numbers of 6, 10, 18 and 20 were not matched in the club lottery, which sees this week's jackpot roll over to £7,400.
