DESPITE the Cardiff Half Marathon taking place last Sunday, 104 runners still took to the regular 5k parkrun course at Barry Island.

The weather conditions were near perfect for running, and it was Guildford & Godalming Athletic Club's Chloë Crossman who was first across the line in 19:47 on her second visit to Barry and only her third ever parkrun. Closely following Chloë was Island stalwart Rob Newman. Rob has gone from running the course in 22 minutes to now putting in regular sub 20 minute performances and today marked Rob's highest finish position. Thirty or so seconds behind Rob were Rhys Hardman and Paul Kehl. Next ladies home were Caitlin Williams and Lisa Papura in the 12th and 14th positions.

A belated shout-out goes to Gareth Donovan, who celebrated his 50th parkrun this morning, with all 50 being at Barry. Gareth now qualifies for the red '50' milestone shirt. Other shirts are obtained after 100, 250 and 500 runs for seniors, whilst juniors have an extra incentive after 10 runs, and volunteers can claim theirs after volunteering on 25 occasions.

Run Director, Dave Shields, said: "The 'Cardiff Half effect' on parkrun is that we usually get a reduced number of runners and a higher number of volunteers with people resting up before the 13 and a bit miles tomorrow. This week was no exception and it was great to see not only an overflowing volunteer register but also 20 first timers to the event. Even accounting for a number of runners that were running the 'diff on Sunday, 20% of the field still ran PB's!"

This Saturday sees parkrun celebrate it's 13th anniversary and all runners are encouraged to don the apricot t-shirts for a worldwide photo call using #parkrun13 on social media

The event was made possible by 26 volunteers:

Mike JAMES • Simon PILL • Lyn EVANS • Tessa MATTHEWS • Dave SHIELDS • Rachel DAVIES • Richard WILLIAMS • Lisa WILLIAMS • Peter TROTT • Sue GERSHENSON • John DEAKIN • Rachel HAMANDI • Julie SMITH • Rachel JONES • Nadia HAMANDI • Sophia HAMANDI • Helen MCCARTHY • Linda CHAPPLE • Alun CHAPPLE • Nathan KING • Nick EVERITT • Michael JAMES • Christopher BARNSLEY • Hugh SMITH • Richard RENDELL • Lindsay CAPUS
