CADOXTON Barry were missing a number of first team regulars as they suffered a heavy defeat away to Cornelly United last weekend.

Without key players Oaten, Sansome and Donnelly, all of whom had been key in their rise to the top, Cadoxton had no answer to a Cornelly side who fielded four new players with higher level experience.

Cadoxton Barry had a torrid time of it during the first half, Stringer making a flying dive to save from a 20 yard strike in the opening minutes.

With just ten minutes gone, a United throw in from the left initiated an attack. The cross saw a mix up in the CB defence, causing Stringer to come forward in an attempt to smother the ball. He missed out, allowing Thyer to roll the ball into an unguarded CB net.

Meanwhile, playing up the slope, CB struggled to build any sort of sustained forward momentum. And not long after, a move down the right culminated with a ball across the face of the CB goal which, in attempting to clear, only saw Adamson inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

By the twenty-five minute mark any chance that CB might have had of rescuing a point went when a further mix up at the back allowed Owen in for simple goal. Cadoxton Barry continued to live dangerously up to the half time whistle, luckily getting out of a few further scrapes.

The second half started with Dawe on in place of Constant and Berry on for Powell, but still the pressure remained on the visitors, Stringer making another excellent diving save just two minutes in. However, there were signs that an improvement could be coming as Walsh sent a ball down the wing for Morgan to chase, but his shot went just wide of the far post.

An Adamson cross towards the left side of the box saw Jackhontaw go wide with a volleyed shot, as Cadoxton applied a rustic but effective attacking plan which finally saw them exert some pressure at the opposite end, Cornelly getting away with two goal mouth scrambles.

But just as a CB consolation goal was beginning to look a possibility, a lapse of concentration gifted Cornelly a fourth goal against the run of play, Adamson missing out on an opportunity to clear on the left touch line allowing Owen to double his tally with Cornelly's fourth goal.

CB continued to do more of the attacking during the closing minutes, without ever looking like scoring against a solid home defence.

Special mention goes to Tyler Dawe, who made such an impact in helping to steady the ship when he came on in the second half and also to Rhodri Morgan who mesmerized the right full back before switching to the right to do likewise to the left sided defender.

Next Saturday sees Cadoxton Barry begin two weeks of cup action with a visit to Abercarn for an FAW Trophy second round match. That fixture is followed by a trip to Ynyshir in the W John Owen Alliance League Cup the following week.

A coach will be running to Abercarn, with the departure time yet to be announced. To book a seat, contact Matthew Warner on 07908 095669. The fare is £10.
