BARRY Vets Rugby Club have taken part in the inaugural Welsh Golden Oldies tournament, hosted at Llandaff RFC.

Following on from last year's appearance at the World Golden Oldies competition, hosted in Cardiff, the club accepted an invitation from event organiser Paul to appear in the Mixed 10s competition, incorporating ladies Anna O'Neill and Lyns Phillips into the side.

Paired against Beddau 10s and a Mixed Barbarians Team in the groups, any thoughts of a comfortable win against Beddau were quickly dispelled, with crunching tackles being put in by both sides.

Barry's efforts in the first half were undone by the better organisation of the Beddau Team, but were aided by super-sub Clive Thomas' arrival who added competitive edge and ably assisted Mepham's storming runs.

Barry achieved parity in the latter part of the first half and the second half, with tries being scored by Baz Mills, J Nation and R Rendell.

With many relieved to hear the final whistle, the scoreline ended Barry Vets 3-7 Beddau.

The club would like to pay credit to Gareth Davies for stepping up to the team for his first competitive rugby game.

A more relaxed second fixture was played against Y Goggs/Caernarfon Barbars Team.

Barry may have scored more tries (O 'Neill and Rendell ), but the winner was rugby as a golden booted Vet of many years from Y Goggs dashed through to score to cheers from both sides.

With the games over it was time for some liquid refreshment from the cider tent.

Again, the club would like to thank the Golden Oldies organisers and Llandaff RFC for hosting an excellent event.

Thanks go to the team of : R Rendell, L Phillipps, Mepham, Chris Evans, Clivo Thomas, Lee Jones, Baz Mills, Anna O'Neill, G Davies and J Nation.
