BARRY Romilly Bowls Club travelled to Ynysybwl for their final game of the season to take on a side struggling in the bottom three of the league.

The Rom’ have had an up and down season, but visited Ynysybwl looking for a win to finish in the top three for the season.

On a fine Saturday afternoon Romilly got off to a positive start on a well running green and by the fifth end held a nine shot advantage, mainly thanks to some brilliant drawing bowls by skip Jeff Wright.

As the game progressed, Wright's rink of Jerry Daly, Dave Noble and Clive Collins continued to play well and they held a nine shot lead themselves by the tenth end.

Romilly’s other rinks, skipped by Mike Doyle and Fred Phillips, held leads of seven and five respectfully, whilst Brian Foscolo’s rink was level at ten all giving the ‘Rom’ a 21 shot lead at halfway, 54-33.

Although Romilly were holding a comfortable lead they couldn’t rest on their laurels as the home team were fighting for their First Division survival, and between the eleventh and fifteen ends they reduced their deficit to just nine shots overall. The Romilly rinks of Foscolo and Phillips were overtaken in this period, going behind by three and two respectively, while the other rinks of Doyle and Wright maintained their advantages by wider margins.

In fairness to the Ynysybwl team, they continued to press hard over the final ends but the Romilly rinks of Doyle, Wright and Foscolo composed themselves to win their games, but Phillips' rink never recovered after losing seven of the last nine ends.

The ‘Rom’ ran out comfortable winners by fifteen shots, 95-80, taking twelve points to Ynysybwl’s two.
