WENVOE Castle Golf Club recently held their Ladies Open and attracted a high number of entries from golf clubs throughout the region.

Thankfully the traditional August damp conditions had disappeared and the competition was played in almost ideal weather, with lots of sun and little wind.

The course conditions were very impressive and players complimented the green keeping staff on the general presentation and in particular the high quality of the greens.

The prize for the top score by a visiting team was presented to Karen Parry, Chris Watkins and Marita Williams from Neath Golf Club, who won with an impressive 80 points. Runners up with 74 points were Brenda Tomcyck (Radyr), Cheryl Bird (Pyle and Kenfig) and Cheryl Henderson.

The top score for home players was recorded by Barbara Beedham, Tina Church and Heather Thompson with 71 points. They won on countback ahead of Lynda Campbell, Sandra Hathway and Mags Lewis.

The special prize for nearest the pin on the 2nd hole went to Penny Cope (Tenby Golf Club) whose ball finished just 8ft 5ins from the hole.

If the prize had been awarded for nearest the pin on the 15th hole there is no doubt it would have gone to Marita Williams of Neath Golf Club who achieved a remarkable ‘hole in one’ striking the ball into the hole from 156 yards.

On Saturday it was a good day for Tim Hanson who comfortably won the Dai David Putter Trophy with an excellent gross 72 (net 67). Tim was three strokes ahead of the runner up Anthony David with a net 70 just holding off Dean Rowlands on countback.

On the same day the Ladies had recovered from their efforts in the Ladies Open to contest the Golf Union of Wales/Welsh Dragon Brooch. Barbara Beedham played well to post the best net score of 70 ahead of the runner up Sandra Hathway with a net 74.

On Sunday Nic Caulfield posted an impressive 42 points in the Stableford competition ahead of Nick James with 37 points and the consistent Tim Hanson with 36 points.

The busy programme was completed on August Bank Holiday Monday with the popular Bowen Greenwood Mixed Competition. The winners Jane Lott and Phil Yee won with an exceptional score of a net 62.5 points well ahead of the field and runners up Martin and Mags Lewis with 71.5 points.

Lightning did strike twice when Jane became the second player in 4 days to record a hole in one on the 15th hole. This remarkable feat is calculated at odds of over 12,000 to 1 on each occasion so both Ladies are to be congratulated on their special achievement which was no doubt celebrated in the usual fashion at the 19th hole.

The Club Captain Kota Dayananda thanked all the competitors for supporting the various competitions and in particular the club members and staff for contributing to such a busy and successful weekend.
