THE two faces of Romilly Bowls came to the fore this weekend, knowing positive results against both Ystrad Mynach and Troedyrhiw would not only ensure league safety, but possibly taken them to near the top of the league.

Unfortunately, the ugly side of the Rom' turned up at Ystrad Mynach, with the visitors suffering a heavy defeat. But Romilly were back to their best the following day to register a comfortable win over Troedyrhiw.

Romilly v Ystrad Mynach:

The weather was certainly not suitable for bowling with strong winds and intermittent rain making conditions extremely difficult.

From the outset the home side took the initiative and by the fifth end they were 14 shots ahead with all Romilly rinks in a deficit.

But as the game progressed and the weather worsened the Rom' began to make a fight of it and by the end of the 10th had reduced the deficit to just five shots, Graham Cogbill's rink of Alan Bannister/Jerry Daly and Clive Collins having a six shot advantage. Other Romilly Rinks skipped by Brian Foscolo, Jeff Wright and Mike Doyle were level, five and six down respectively.

Between ends 11 and 15 Doyle, Foscolo and Cogbill's rinks were battling hard against their opposition with all games close, but unfortunately Wright's rink were not at their best and, under extreme pressure from the opposition, had fallen 16 shots behind.

The Rom' were 15 shots down with three ends to play but there was not going to be any miracle, as all rinks gave away further shots.

The final score finished 46-71, with only a tie on Cogbill's rink salvaging Romilly a single point.

Romilly v Troedyrhiw

On Saturday the Rom' welcomed Troedyrhiw to Romilly Park with the weather fair and very different from the previous evening. Once again the importance of the game was immense, with all teams in the league extremely close and with three teams being relegated this season all points were vital.

The early ends were evenly shared, with the scores level after the 10th end at 41-41.

Between the 11th and 15th the Rom' turned the screw with the rink of Kelvyn Mills/Terry Bloomfield/Gwynne Rees and skip Mike Doyle playing superb bowls, they added 14 shots without reply during this period.

Also the rinks of Alun Bryan/Fred Phillips/Mel Newman skip Jeff Wright and Alan Bannister/Jerry Daly/Clive Collins skip Graham Cogbill were holding leads of six and eight respectively.

The only rink struggling was that of Gary Eastment/Paul Swannick/Roger Jones and skip Brian Fosolo who were up against a visiting rink skipped by the young 15-year-old up and coming Welsh Under 25 international Ethan Humphries.

The Romilly rink were always up against the brilliant bowling of Humphries who on numerous occasions turned the head over with his accurate driving, leaving Foscolo's rink four down.

The overall score at the end of the 15th was a 23 shot advantage to the Rom', who led 69-46. With six ends left to play Romilly appeared to be in control but with skips of the calibre of Humphries/Davies and D K (Bomber) Jones the Rom' had to be on their guard, and as expected a concerted effort was made by the three skips who picked up 14 shots from the Romilly rinks.

Fortunately, Wright's rink maintained their form over these ends, collecting a further six shots to ensure an excellent victory for the Rom', as they took 12 points in an 88-72 victory.

The only Romilly rink to go down was that of the old master Foscolo, who on this occasion was outgunned by the Young Master Humphries.

Rink Scores:

Jeff Wright 27 v 15 A Sullivan

Mike Doyle 29 v 17 R Davies

Graham Cogbill 20 v 17 D K Jones

Brian Foscolo 12 v 23 E Humphreys

With the season coming to a close Romilly have two games remaining, away to Gelli Park and Ynysybwl, where eight points should be sufficient for the Rom' to maintain First Division status.

Munro Cup

Romilly played Penarth Belle View at Romilly Park last Wednesday in their final Munro Cup fixture needing a win to secure the Cup. As expected the Rom' had a very comfortable win, taking the Cup for the third time in four years.
