SULLY Centurions hosted Vale CC last Saturday, July 30, on a day that ended without result after being dominated by the weather.

After losing Santosh Singh in the first over, Centurions’ second wicket pair of David Goodway and Gethin Hicks turned the game round in style. Hicks was eventually out for 30 but Goodway went on to hit a classy 101 not-out, helping boost the total to a healthy 198-4 at the end of the 45 overs.

In reply Vale had reached 142-6 when the rain, which had been a problem all afternoon, finally put paid to the match proceedings. It was abandoned with 12 overs remaining.

Second XI

The Second XI travelled up the A48 to play Vale Second XI, overcoming the weather as well as the opposition to get their season back on track.

The conditions dictated that after winning the toss, skipper Dave Sylvester elected to put the hosts in to bat. This proved a smart decision and Vale were very soon in trouble with the scoreboard showing 18-3, but Merry (28) and Kelland (45) shared a fourth wicket partnership of 89 to give the hosts some hope.

A devastating collapse followed however, as Vale's last six wickets proceeded to fall for just 12 runs to leave the hosts 119 all-out.

Centurions bowlers Iwan Thomas (3-10 from 5 overs) and Jason Hicks (3-30 from 8) wreaked havoc as the lower order fell apart, leaving the visitors in a commanding position at the midway stage.

In reply, Jason Hicks followed up his good bowling form with a well constructed 43 before being stumped off the bowling of Merry. With the middle order all chipping in with decent scores, the target was reached for the loss of 5 wickets in the 34th over.
